Boat of Garten

Eight miles northeast of Aviemore is the tiny village of Boat of Garten which suddenly shot to fame when a pair of ospreys, which had disappeared from these shores, reappeared on nearby Loch Garten, two miles east of the village. Now these beautiful birds of prey have established themselves here and elsewhere and there are thought be well over 100 pairs throughout the Highlands.

The Abernethy Forest RSPB Reserve on the shore of Loch Garten is best visited during the nesting season, between late April and August, when the RSPB opens an observation centre. This is the only place in the world to see Scottish crossbills. Info - Daily in season 1000-1800. You can also see ospreys at the Rothiemurchus trout loch at Inverdruie, and maybe even on Loch Morlich and Loch Insh. The reserve is also home to several other rare species such as capercaillie, whooper swans and red squirrels. Guided walks leave from the observation centre at 0930 on Wednesdays.

The village is well connected by main A95 route which serves a lot to the place and makes it easy accesseble to near by regions. The landmark to the place was the railway station which was established way back in mid 1800s. This rail route connects it to Nethy Bridge, Keith, Aberdeen and Aviemore. The railway station lies close to the centre of the village behind the boat hotel.
