Castles in Aberdeenshire & Moray

Aberdeenshire in Scotland is particularly famous for an extraordinary number of fabulous castles, some of which have been inhabited for at least 600 years. Set out on an interesting Castle Trail that will help you explorethe glorious past and the  dramatic stories of 17 of Aberdeenshire’s most famous castles.

Abergairn Castle

A small tower-house, erected in 1614, comprising a rectangular main building surviving to 4ft maximum height, with a round tower at its NW angle, 10ft maximum height. The small size of the structure suggests that it was a hunting lodge of three or four storeys with garret.

Aboyne Castle

Formerly derelict castle that was restored in 1979 by the Marquess of Huntly. The building was once more extensive but has been remodelled to class tower style castle.

Balbegno Castle

16th Century tower house that has recently become a very smart rental home owned by descendant of Prime Minister Glasdstone.

Ballogie House

Mansion built on the site of older house and now operated as self catering. Pretty location and in a modest Georgian style

Cawdor Castle

14th Century castle that is still inhabited by the original family. Outstanding gardens and very interesting interior make this an excellent day out. Near Nairn.

Ardclach Bell Tower

A curiously small two storeyed tower built in the Covenanter period probably as a watch tower. Lovely location and easy to visit. Worth a stop!

Balmoral Castle

Eight miles west of Ballater is the area's main attraction, Balmoral Castle. You can visit the gardens and some of the castle between April and July during the year...

Birkenbog House

Probably 1730-40 wing of earlier mansion/tower house apparently re-modelled 1795-1800 as principal dwelling after fire.

Castle of Park

Lovely pink 16th century castle near Banff that is now a B&B and a very sumptious and historical one with excellent art on the walls.

Corgarff Castle

Very striking tower house that was converted into barracks. Its setting on the moorland make this a very remarkable and unique castle.
