Fishing has been the life and soul of Eyemouth since the 13th century and the Eyemouth Museum, in the Auld Kirk on Market Place, has displays on the town's fishing heritage. The centrepiece is the Eyemouth Tapestry, made by local people in 1981 to mark the centenary of the Great Disaster of 1881, when 189 local fishermen were drowned during a violent storm.
The waters around Eyemouth are excellent for scuba diving. They form part of the (St Abbs and Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve) one of the best dive sites in Scotland, with a wide variety of marine life and the spectacular Cathedral Rock.
