Ayton Castle

Privately owned Victorian Gothic castle near Eyemouth in the Scottish borders with "scandalous" recent history


 Victorian Gothic castle built in 1850s and the last work by noted Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham with various additions by other architects over a 30 year period. The castle was visited by Mark Twain who was so taken with the fireplace that he bought it and returned to America with it. It is now located at the Mark Twain Museum.

Opening Times

The castle is not open and is said to be somewhat dishevilled.
