Isle of Luing

The visitor guide on Isle of Luing in Argyll gives you information on the area. Also included are accommodation and hotels in Isle of Luing.

The long, thin island of Luing (pronounced 'Ling') once had a population of around 600 which was drastically reduced during the Clearances to make way for cattle. The island is still well known for its beef, and is the home of a successful new breed named after it.

The island is small, six miles by two, and mostly flat, making it ideal for exploring by bike. Bikes can be hired by the ferry (contact Luing Bike Hire, Tel. 01852 314274). There's also a post office and general store on the way to Cullipool.

The only other village is Toberonochy, three miles from Cullipool on the east coast. It's another village of attractive white cottages built for slate workers and nested below a ruined church.
